Week 4: Overcoming Obstacles

This week was pretty slow since my supervisor was out for three days. So, the head of the interns at my office had assigned me to take up her position of sitting at the front desk (answering phone calls, sending out packages, etc.) while she was busy with other tasks. I've sat at the front desk before, but in the past, the phone has never rang, so I've never had to transfer any calls. However, while sitting at the front desk for four hours throughout the day, I was bound to receive a phone call.

The phone rang many times, and, as instructed, I had to transfer the callers to workers in my office. While put under pressure, I started off nervous to look up the right name and the right extension code in order to transfer the person on the phone. When two people have the same name, I would again become nervous as I did not know which specific person the caller was looking for. However, after transferring callers many times, I got the hang of it, and it became much more simple.

Also while sitting at the desk, I had to fill out FedEx shipping labels for delivery/pick up. I had never done this before and was not instructed how to complete the forms, so it was a little confusing at first. Again, after filling out multiple labels, I got the hang of it, and the process became much easier. After being nervous to complete new and unfamiliar tasks, I realized that by facing them head on and completing the same job numerous times, it will eventually become something familiar to me.

  1. Emily, it sounds like you learned a lot from this experience and developed a new talent for working well under pressure! You should be so proud of your work that they offered you this job while your supervisor was out of the office. Keep up the good work!
