Blog #4 Changing Perspectives: Maddie Fasel

It’s early July and I have been at Chicago Sun-Times SPLASH Magazine since late May, therefore I see a tremendous improvement in myself, as well as the culture I have been working in. I wouldn’t say that my perspective about myself has changed, because luckily I have known for a while that entertainment writing is something I have always loved, but I would say that my outlook on SPLASH and my future in general has gained a new perspective. With that, I have noticed that SPLASH has all the aspects I want in a future job.

That being said, I love the culture of SPLASH and being able to come to work everyday in such a comfortable atmosphere. Because I work in the Sun-Times building, it is evident that the environment of SPLASH is completely different than that of a more somewhat “serious” journalism outlook in the Sun-Times (for example SPLASH is decorated, colorful, fun, friendly, fashionable, etc.) and that is something I love! I am a very creative and open-minded, so being in an atmosphere that is serious is something I would not be comfortable in. This is something I have observed after the months I have been working at SPLASH, that many of the Sun-Times colleagues are jealous of the close-relationships and fun setting here in the SPLASH side of the building.

To continue, I have not changed any of my preconceived notions, I have just learned a better understanding of what it takes to be an editorial/journalism/communications major—and that I want to continue with this major! I currently hope to be a communications major and working at SPLASH has made me realize that a lot of the tools and tricks I learned in COMM classes at U Mich have helped me in my job here.  Overall, Chicago is my home and I live only 15 minutes away from the Sun-Times building, so wanting to live here in the future is definitely something I want to do—and working at SPLASH in the future hopefully is something I can do!
