First Day at CBS

Today was my first day at CBS studios, San Diego's News 8, in the Promotions and Community Affairs department. Before my internship began I often got the question, "What are you going to be doing at CBS?" and my answer was "Whatever they want me to do! I'm not 100% sure.". Within minutes of entering the studio I immediately understood what I was going to be doing. This summer as an intern at CBS 8 I will help the Promotions department produce and edit promotional commercials and community project as well as learn how a news cast is formed from beginning to end.

Upon arriving at 10 am I was asked to fill out some paperwork and was then escorted to the studio room where I met my boss. Within the first ten minutes at the studio I submerged in the company. I was on set standing at the anchor desk, learning about the the TelePrompTers, the Green Screen, and many other pieces of technology used in every day news casts.

Next we went to the Control Room and I watched a promotional video be created from beginning to end. This promotional video was a common commercial we see on a news station saying, "Stay tuned for Channel 8 news at 11 am with _______" followed by a few headlines. This promo was to air on the news at 11 am which was in 20 minutes.  Seeing how quickly these promos were put together made me realize that working in a news station is so unpredictable as breaking news can happen any moment which can change your storyline completely.

I had an amazing first day and I already learned so much and I am so excited to continue my work at CBS this summer.

  1. That sounds awesome! My sister actually has interned at CBS the past two summers (one in LA, last summer in NYC). Last month before she graduated from Berkeley they actually offered her a job in their investigative news unit in NYC. She loves it, so that should be some encouraging news for you - if you like CBS you should stick with it and maybe it will turn into a full time job once you graduate!

  2. This sounds like an amazing, action packed experience! It is great to find out you will rarely be bored all summer. It makes going to work every day that much more exciting. I am sure you will have great stories to come from this.
