My boss, Courtney
Hoffman, has been dubbed ‘Queen of the Indies’ for her work as a designer on
three movies premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this year. For those who
aren’t film fanatics, that’s an incredible feat. More impressively, she is only
29 years old. Not only does Courtney take a hands on approach to her work, but
she is adamant about teaching her interns about everything she knows. Our costume
supervisor, Anastasia Magoutas, is also equally as interested in sharing her
wealth of knowledge. Courtney and Anastasia have been working together for two
years and they have a similar way of doing things, making it easy to learn from
them as many designers and people in this industry have very specific ways of
doing things. This week I learned how to age and distress clothing.

There are
so many techniques I never would have thought of using. Since the movie is
about a poorly cared for insane asylum, the clothes had to seem as if they
hadn’t be washed in ages. It was great being able to not only learn these
techniques, but also apply them on actual clothing we were going to use. I am
constantly learning new things and it wouldn’t be possible without the guidance
of my colleagues.
It is great that you get to learn from talented people. It sounds like a fun and hands on experience that will come in handy later in your career. Have there been other tips your mentors have taught you that are not specific to film?
