Changing Perspectives at the 48th District Court

During my 4th week of my internship at the 48th District court my perspective has slightly changed. Each day I enter the courtroom with more knowledge than I have the day before. I find myself able to predict the outcome of each case, what each defendant, offender and/or attorney might say before the Judge, and how everyone in the court room and on the bench might react to various statements. Of course I am not knowledgable to be a Judge or attorney after only 4 weeks in the courtroom, however I feel as though I have learned more in the last 4 weeks that I had ever imagined.
Before each day, Judge Small takes me into her office and discusses every case that is going before her that day. She allows me to look over all the case information with the defendants previous convictions and statements and teaches me how I should be looking at the case. She then provides me with her thoughts as well as the attorneys thoughts and the probation departments thoughts if applicable. Sometimes Judge will ask me what I think her ruling should be on a case before she even looks at it herself which always boosts my confidence in my ability to learn quickly!
My perspective continues to change rapidly as I learn new laws and rules in the courtroom day by day. I hope I continue to learn as much as I have in the past 4 weeks with the remainder of my internship as I look forward to growing and developing as my interest in the courtroom increases drastically!

  1. Your internship sounds amazing! What an awesome experience to be taught first hand from a judge and see the court room from her eyes. It is awesome that she asks for your opinion as it shows that she values your insight and believes in you in this field.

  2. My internship in the film industry is so completely opposite of yours that I am thoroughly impressed at what you're doing. Even if you've only been there 4 weeks I'm sure it has made you more knowledgable about the legal system than most people.

  4. It's so great that your experience is so hands-on and the judge takes time out of her day to discuss cases with you. It seems like this internship will make you extremely knowledgable in the legal field! Good luck with the end of your internship.

  5. That's so interesting that you get to talk to the judge. I work on the press side of this in Pittsburgh, and I've also found that I can predict a lot of the outcomes in the case. We're in very different worlds, though!
